Iowa is home to the following:

  • Iowa State University (ISU) has one of the top animal genetics and genomics research groups in the United States, is the world leader in livestock breeding and animal production research and has internationally recognized strengths in microbial genomics and infectious disease.
  • The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Animal Disease Center (NADC) is the major federal center for domestic and emerging animal disease research, conducting basic and applied research on selected diseases of economic importance to the U.S. livestock and poultry industries.
  • USDA’s National Veterinary Science Labs (NVSL) leads the nation with its premier laboratory for domestic and foreign animal disease diagnosis—a critical component in the United States’ ability to defend animal populations from domestic and foreign animal diseases.
  • USDA’s Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) regulates veterinarian biologics including vaccines, bacterins, antisera and diagnostic kits to ensure they are safe, potent and effective. Understanding how critical each of these research facilities are to both the nation’s economics and food supply, the USDA is investing to expand, modernize and consolidate these three agencies into one state-of-the-art facility in Ames, Iowa.
