Illinois Automotive Industry

ILLINOIS is the 7th largest state for automotive production, is strategically situated in "auto Alley" and is also an important manufacturing state for trucks and heavy machinery.

Illinois is home to two major automotive manufacturers : the FORD Assembly Plant in Chicago and the Fiat Chrysler plant at Belvidere (about 1 hr west of Chicago O Hare).

At Ford, the models produced include the Explorer, which had an increase in sales of 22% since last year, the Taurus and police Interceptors. In 2014, the factory produced 366,672 vehicles (Automotive News data). The FORD Chicago plant employs about 4,000 people and its nearby stamping plant employs about 1,000 people. FORD have a 155 acre Supplier south of Chicago.

At Fiat Chrysler plant , the models produced are the Jeep Compass and Patriot SUVs and the Dodge Dart. At this plant, nearly 4,500 Fiat Chrysler employees made 348,552 vehicles last year in 2014 which was an increase of 7.2 percent from 2013.

Illinois is also the global headquarters and location for production facilities for Caterpillar, John Deere and Navistar.

Illinois remains Caterpillar's largest concentration of employees and facilities anywhere in the world, with about 22,600 employees and two dozen facilities throughout the state. John Deere maintains 4 production facilities in Illinois and employs about 8,000 workers in Moline , west Illinois. Finally Navistar, a manufacturer of buses, trucks, defense vehicles and engines is headquartered in Lisle Illinois.
