2020/42 British Furniture manufacturer Muzo sets up new Global Headquarters in Pennsylvania

Classroom learning and Office furniture producer Muzo, founded 1999 in Yorkshire, UK and Mr. Darren Buttle, the founder and CEO was waiting for the right opportunity to meet the needs of his growing business, and when it arose, he quickly jumped at the chance to lease the 74,000 square-foot facility in the Valmont Industrial Park, West Hazleton in Pennsylvania that had just recently become available.

It was 10 years ago when Buttle first decided on Greater Hazleton for a U.S. manufacturing facility. He said sales in the United States were increasing and one day he got a knock on his door back in Yorkshire. There stood a representative from the Pennsylvania Office of International Business Development, Mr. Richard Kilner who persuaded him to take a trip to Pennsylvania to explore the opportunity of opening manufacturing here.

Back In 2010, he found space in the CAN DO Corporate Center that offered him a flexible lease where he began making and shipping his furniture throughout the United States and beyond. Buttle said he particularly liked this region because it reminds him of Yorkshire. As demand for his furniture increased over the years, Muzo was running out of space and D. Buttle began researching options for a new location.

“For the last couple of years we have been trying to solve Darren’s growth problems. He needed a space that was going to be flexible enough for him to expand, not for just this next step but as he grows into the future,” EVP Joe Lettiere said. That’s when the building in Valmont became available and CAN DO worked with him to arrange a flexible lease that led to his decision to not only plan expansions in this location but also to move his global headquarters to West Hazleton, PA.

“We are a growing business. We’ve established ourselves in this region and we like the people and we like the area,” Buttle said. “Transportation routes are great here and our east coast business is very, very strong. We sell worldwide and will be exporting from here to a number of regions around the world.”

Currently distributing to 41 countries, Muzo combines the best in British design with the best in American engineering and manufacturing, Buttle said.

The company’s designs have become so popular that major corporations such as Google, Facebook and Coca-Cola are using Muzo’s furniture.

He added that the company plans on expanding its workforce here by more than 50 people over the next 12-18 months. “We will grow as fast as we can find great people,” Buttle said.

Mr. Buttle said the company plans on launching manufacturing and distribution in Valmont by February 1, 2021.

United Kingdom’s Largest Kitchen Retailer Chooses Pennsylvania for North American Headquarters and First Manufacturing Facility

October 2020: Governor Tom Wolf announced that Wren Manufacturing, Inc., a manufacturer of custom kitchen cabinets, will establish its North American headquarters and a manufacturing center in Luzerne County, PA.

“Wren Manufacturing’s choice to establish its North American headquarters in Pennsylvania speaks to what our commonwealth can offer to businesses looking to grow and expand,” said Gov. Wolf.

“This move will make a great difference in this Luzerne County community, making nearly 400 new jobs available as our economy moves toward recovery.” Wren Manufacturing is a privately-owned British designer, manufacturer, and retailer of custom kitchen cabinets. The company is disrupting the custom cabinet market by improving the shopping experience—enabling customization of each product online and through a virtual reality experience at its network of retail centers. The company intends to add retail centers across the North America and provide support to them from this location. The company leased a 252,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and a 10,046-square-foot office facility in Luzerne County. The company will invest $15,5 millions in leasehold improvements and new equipment.

This international move speaks to the strength of Pennsylvania’s business climate. Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary Dennis Davin visited Wren Manufacturing’s headquarters in the United Kingdom in September 2019 on a business development mission that highlighted the commonwealth’s competitive advantages in workforce and advanced manufacturing to prospective investors considering the establishment of American operations. “We’re excited to bring our vertically integrated model to the United States, the largest home improvement market in the world,” said Rafal Klimek, Manufacturing and Logistics Director for Wren Kitchens. “Luzerne County has a tremendous amount of talent in the local area and its location allows us to reach a huge percentage of the American population within a short drive time."

Wren Manufacturing received a funding proposal from DCED for a $1.25 million Pennsylvania First grant, $392,400 in funding for job training through the WEDnet program, and $720,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits to be distributed upon creation of the new jobs. The company may also be eligible for DCED’s Manufacturing Tax Credit (MTC) program.

The project was coordinated by the Governor’s Action Team, an experienced group of economic development professionals who report directly to the governor and work with businesses that are considering locating or expanding in Pennsylvania, with assistance from the Office of International Business Development and its representative in the United Kingdom.
